What is a Christian Science Reading Room?

A Reading Room is what some people today might call a Christian Study Center — a hospitable gathering place for community and learning, animated by faith seeking understanding. It’s open to spiritual seekers of any background: a quiet hub where you can wrestle with the big questions of meaning, purpose, and healing, with good material at hand and someone nearby if you want to talk it through. Ours sits on Madison’s west side, near Hilldale, carrying forward that same intent: a small measure of salt and light for our world.

Reading room” wasn’t a Christian Science invention — it was a familiar fixture of 19th-century life. Railway stations kept them so commuters had somewhere to sit and read while waiting for the next train; libraries, YMCAs, and civic clubs had them too. A Christian Science Reading Room was simply that same idea, applied to this literature: a public room, open to anyone, stocked with something worth reading.

The first one opened in Boston in 1887. As the idea spread to churches across the country, Mary Baker Eddy directed in 1899 that every Christian Science church maintain one. Early Reading Rooms were often located in business districts and kept evening hours so that, as one early account put it, “the merchant and the shop-hand can escape from the whirl of daily life and find a resting-place.”

Our own Reading Room has followed that same downtown tradition over the years, moving through several locations in the heart of Madison — State Street, Pinckney Street, and Monroe Street among them — before settling into its current home within the church building in 2012.

That purpose hasn’t changed. A Reading Room is still a harbor of rest — a place to explore Christian Science teachings at your own pace, find a book or article that speaks to what you’re going through, or simply sit and think. You don’t need an appointment, and you don’t need to be a member of our church to visit.
